Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified PS Vita Review
Call of Duty in your hand!
Before I start this review I’d like to mention two things:
1) It has become clear that some users are having problems with multiplayer. I live in the UK and apart from the odd disconnection I have had no problems in finding, connecting or playing multiplayer games.
2) Another point I'd like to make is the fact that I have bought this game myself, we don't get paid for what we do or say and we play games in the good old fashioned way, for fun.
Now let’s get on with the review.
Declassified has had a rough ride, it was a no show at E3 then a very rough looking first show at Gamescom in Germany. After that, well nothing. I feared the worst and with some websites trying to stand out by further slating the game before giving it a chance, I knew that reviews would hack this game to bits and then they would return to the console COD for some good old twitch shooting.
Yes I can't stand Call of Duty, being an older gamer I loved the World War 2 games. So I'm reviewing this as a FPS on the Vita, a mobile hand-held console.
On booting up you sign into PSN and the game is connected at all times logging your best scores etc and this makes hopping in and out of Multiplayer to Single Player a breeze.
The Single player is broken up into Campaign, time trial and hostiles, a mode that I hope will be updated with co-op play as this is kind of like Zombies with wave after wave of enemies zoning in on your position.
Time trial is like a shooting range that you run through being scored as you go.
For the campaign think Unit 13, small missions based in the modern era.
On my first play the first thing that jumped out were the graphics and effects that pop on the Vitas screen.
The M4 looks brilliant with swinging clasp at the end of the gun. Everything runs smoothly, in fact very smoothly. You will need to tailor the look speed to suit yourself as it's quite fast and took me a good 30 minutes or so to get used to it.
While I'm not saying the AI is razor sharp they do come after you and hunt you down. Once or twice the AI has got caught on stuff but hey, this is COD right?
Play on Hardened straight off, the AI is so much harder and missions will last longer. The game can be very hard at times.
As this is an FPS let’s not forget the important part, the shooting.
It’s tight and smooth and is without a doubt the best mobile/hand-held first person shooter I've played which is in part down to the great twin sticks of the Vita and I can't wait for Killzone to better this game.
Multiplayer is for 8 players. You can create a party using the Party app on the vita and it lets players join you from chat.
The games I've played are fast; in fact the talk I've heard about players from certain other websites wandering around trying to find action is total crap. Please, if you’re going to slate a game be factual.
Shooting is quick, nothing like Resistance. Kill streaks and the like are all here on neat maps that don't take long to get used to. Now this is not Battlefield, maps are smaller but this keeps the action flowing.
Like I have said at the start of this review, I have only had a handful of DC's etc in all the games I have played. I remember other COD games being UNPLAYABLE in the first few days that they came out but it didn't stop the 9 and 10's review scores did it?
I bought this game as my Vita isn't overrun with loads of games and I did enjoy Resistance. I have read two very scathing reviews of Declassified before writing this review and I'm sure more are to follow. I'm a gamer, I love games, I paid for it and I'll say what the hell I like about it. I really like Black Ops and I would like gamers to play it. Those that have played it and posted their thoughts on Metacritc all say that they were surprised by how good it is as I was.
Activision need to get DLC out as quick as possible and it needs to be free, add Zombies co-op modes and more maps etc to build of the foundations of a great little shooter.
Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified is a fast paced shooter that has a great hop in and play MP mode. Too many Vita games are compared to PS3 games instead of being given credit for what they are and that is true for COD which is a good FPS.
