PlayStation 3 Hardware Hits 35 Million
Sony catching up to Microsoft in console sales
Sony's console hardware is inching closer to the competition.
A spokesperson confirmed the company sold has sold 35.7 milllion PlayStation 3 units worldwide as of March 2010.
During its annual 2009 fiscal results from early this morning, Sony revealed it sold 13 million PS3 consoles for the year.
This is an improvement over 2008, which saw sales of 10 million units.
"Having just surpassed nine consecutive months of year over year growth for PS3 hardware and a revenue increase of 32 percent for PS3 software since last April, we look at today's earnings as a proof point to our business model, said SCEA president Jack Tretton.
For comparison, worldwide life-to-date Nintendo Wii hardware sales through March 2010 topped 70 million.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 console sales have reached 40 million worldwide.
The PS3 has been the fastest selling home console for weeks in Japan and at this rate it wont be long before they overtake Microsoft with poor 360 sales still bogging MS down in the East.
The PSP 3000 still heades up the charts in the east and has kept true to form from January this year. The PS3 is in a not so far off second.
