Seeing the YLOD is a heart breaking moment for any Playstation 3 owner, some never recover from it and many need counseling afterwards.

Here were going to provide some tips on how to avoid going through this traumatic experience and possible fixes if you already have the YLOD

What is the YLOD ?

The yellow light of death is when your PS3 bleeps two times when you turn it on and the light on the front flashes yellow. Like in this video below:

What Does It Mean ?

Seeing this means that your PS3 has experienced some sort of hardware failure and is currently a very expensive paper weight.

How Can I Prevent It ?

You can help prevent experiencing the YLOD by doing the following:

  • Ensuring your PS3 has sufficient ventilation. This means making sure that the vents around your PS3 are not too close to other objects such as walls.
  • Ensuring your PS3 is not exposed to extreme temperatures. This means not placing it on top of other devices that get hot or keeping it in the freezer
  • Carrying out regular maintence of your PS3. This means using a hoover to suck dust out of the console through the vents at least once a month

Tip !

  • You can suck more dust out by removing the hard drive and hovering in the hard drive enclosure

What Should I do If I already have the YLOD ?

RING SONY

Even if your console is out of warranty you have nothing too loose. Ring Sony and if it is in warranty they will fix it and if not they may still be willing to do something to help you.

If they wont fix it for free, you can purchase a refurbished one and return your broken one for around £100

Can I Fix it Myself ?

Yes

The BBC TV show in the UK showed how by heating the main circuit board you could bring the PS3 back to life.

I Don't Have a Fancy Circuit Board Heater How Can I do it ?

It is possible to heat the board up enough with a heatgun that can be purchased at DIY shops. They are normally used for things such as stripping paint and heating frozen pipes.

CAUTION: HEATGUN'S GET INCREDIBLY HOT ALWAYS BE AWARE OF WHAT YOU ARE POINTING IT AT

These videos show how to do it ...

I Dont Have a Heat Gun How Can I Do it ?

One of our members fixed their PS3 with the YLOD using a hair dryer. The advantage of this method is that it doesn't require you to take your Playstation apart

1) Put the PS3 in a jumper or something simmilar to insulate it and stop the heat escaping

2) Blow heat from the hair dryer into the rear vent for 10 minuites

3) Leave it to cool down

Tips !

  • Store the screws in containers and label them as you take them out. There are ALOT of screws and you need to know which ones go where for when you reassemble it
  • Be careful when removing the ribbon cable connecting the blu ray drive. The connector can become damaged easily. Lift the plastic clip up gently and pull the cable out
  • Be sure to clean the old thermal paste oFf with either rubbing alcohol or a specialist cleaning solution
  • You MUST replace the old thermal paste before you reassembly the PS3. Arctic Silver 5 is the best stuff to use but the cheaper ones should be fine

That Didn't Work, Now What ?

If your PS3 still isn't working after attempting to reflow the motherboard then the best advice I can give you is to sell your Playstation 3 for spares / repairs on Ebay
